I Borboni

I Borboni is an historic estate run by the Numeroso family who uphold the local winemaking tradition tied to the Aspirinion grape. Indigenous to the area of Campania surrounding Caserta, it was the I Borboni estate who were the first to experiment with its use for a sparkling wine known as Asprinio Aversa DOC back in the 1970s.

Passed down through the generations, the family is proud of this heritage. They continue to work with Aspirinio vines, cultivating them in the traditional method against masts in order for them to cling to trees; a prime example of biodiversity. After harvest, the Asprinio grapes are taken to the family’s cellar in the heart of the historic centre of Lusciano. Here, they have reimplemented the tradition of using an underground cave network that ensures a constant humidity and temperature throughout the course of the year.

In addition to making the sparkling wines for which Aspirinio is renowned, the present generation have expanded their production into still wines. What this brings to the fore are the characteristics of this grape; its acidity and sharpness that is in part due to the volcanic soil on which it grows.
